Well, I'll agree with one thing - the new page certainly is slick. It =
looks great, in fact, and I have to agree with Jen Timbrook's comments =
that the new look will be great in terms of PR.
However, web pages also have to be USEFUL. Currently, there is only a =
handful of information on the page - the basic skeleton, if you will. I =
understand the need to have the page up for testing (can people get to =
it, does it work, etc.) but what about the other pages? Would it have =
been so bad to leave Fuzz's pages up at LEAST until all the information =
had been copied over and was available.
I'm happy to see the direction the Fraternity is looking towards in =
terms of HOW we look on the web, but I think that to just CHANGE the =
pages over and not have access to the other stuff during the transition =
is NOT a good thing. I complained to Mark Dearing, Region VI Director, =
that my biggest problem was that I didn't know where to find anything - =
I had become used to the Web HQ. I don't mind learning a new page, so =
long as there is SOMETHING there to learn, and there currently isn't.
In my opinion, this transition was NOT well planned or thought out - I'm =
not a genius or artist when it comes to web pages (though I maintain the =
page for Section 52) but I have to tell you at least my pages were =
USEFUL before they went on-line.
Please, and I am addressing this to WHOMEVER is responsible, either =
bring back the Web HQ until the new page is completely done, or get all =
the information (how about a complete calendar of events and a =
submission tool, for example) up ASAP. I know these things take time, =
but more thought should have been given.
As for speed, I have a dedicated T1 at work and a v90 modem at home, and =
speed isn't that bad - I get the whole page in about, oh 15-20 seconds. =
However, not everyone has the same equipment I do - graphics are nice, =
but they can drag the page down if they are overused (mapped images, for =
example.) Adn if the response is going to be, "well, you can just turn =
the graphics off in your browser," my argument would be, "why have them =
at all then?"
What do I know? I'm just an armchair webmaster.
:-)
Fraternally,
Mark Stratton
Section 52 Communications Chair
