Bros.,

The sun finally broke through around 3 pm this afternoon. Damage in
Tulsa County is very minimal. A handful of buildings damaged on the west
side, some street flooding on the north side of town. The Tulsa Zoo did
have to close due to flooding. At 12:30 am Tulsa was literally staring down
the barrel of a loaded gun. The tornadoes more or less got to about the
Arkansas River on the west side and fizzled out. Heavier damage in Creek
County to the west, in Sand Springs and Sapulpa. Also very heavy damage to
the towns along the I-44/Turner Turnpike, even damage to the main toll
gates.

By now y'all probably know about as much about the damage in OK City as I
do. The talk now is that there was a series of F5s (the worst of the worst)
hitting the area (Decades usually pass between F5 strikes). Absolutely
unbelievable.

All the universities, as far as I know, continued with finals today,
almost as if nothing had happened. I dropped in at the law school and went
to run a few errands. The one thing that was said by everybody I
encountered today was that "we were lucky."

As for the relief effort, the City of Tulsa shipped nearly its entire
reserve blood supply to OK City. All day today, the hospitals and clinics
were packed with people lined up to give blood; they were so packed that the
hospitals had the local media advising everybody to call and make an
appointment. A local radio station, KVOO, was taking donations of food and
clothing. Beta Pi Chapter had some food and clothing from our Hurricane
relief drive late last sem. Red Cross couldn't handle those kinds of goods.
Today we made good use of them.

Being a 2 hour drive away from the more heavily damaged areas and having
exams and commencement this week does make it very difficult for this
chapter to render aid. Exams have also tied up the other chapters in our
Section. However, based on what was said at Beta Pi's Officers' meeting
today, the chapter does have a strong desire to hold another silent auction
next fall to raise money for the Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund. The first
time we did it, we raised $900.00. I won't be here next year to
participate, but I'm sure that next year's auction will be every bit as
successful (or more) as last year's.

Again, if you wish to help, call the Red Cross.

On behalf of my chapter and myself, thank you for your support, ideas,
and encouragement.

Fraternally,

Phil Dore
