john,
my chapter has given out about 25-30 dsk's in our 66 year history. i,
however, have only been a brother when 2 of them were given out. the way
we handled it, was that we asked our brotherhood to write down on a piece
of paper who they think best represented the cardinal principles and who
they thought deserved this honor. when we got the ballots back, there were
5 names that were the most prominent. the brotherhood was then asked to
choose between those 5 who they wanted to receive this honor, and we found
the 2 that came away with the most votes. and those were the two brothers
that we gave the dsk's to. one of them was an advisor at the time, and we
got lucky that she wasn't present at either of the meetings where we were
voting. and the other brother had just graduated. it was a surprise for
both of them, and they were awarded the dsk's at our 65th anniversary
banquet in the fall of 1997. both brothers had given extensively to the
brotherhood and led the brotherhood in every possible aspect; thru exec
positions, thru example, and by being incredible friends.
