After seeing Sarah's post requesting info on people in Australia, I made a
post to another list I'm on to which many Aussies belong. This was a
response I got. I thought you might like to see what others thought about us.

>Back in September, I organized a S&S contingent that volunteered to clean
up a
>stretch of coast line here in NYC during the 1998 International Coastal
>Clean-Up. I asked members of Polytechnic University's chapter of APO to work
>with Sword and Staff members to clean up the shoreline adjacent to Little
Neck
>Bay in Queens. (Polytechnic is where I work and teach.) Members of APO joined
>Sword and Staff volunteers, and we while we all worked hard picking up
about a
>half-ton of trash from the shoreline, we also had a great time getting to
know
>each other and laughing over some of the inane situations we found ourselves
>in. The APO volunteers were conscientious, and caring, and they got a real
kick
>out of being associated with S&S and X:WP. I now get members of APO
stopping by
>my office for information on our latest auction, or to ask about something
>they've seen on the S&S website. What a kick that is! And I have to say that
>I'm delighted that members of Poly's APO have already asked about the next
>Coastal Clean-up and it looks like more volunteers from APO will be
joining us
>again later this year. ;-)
>
>As a University administrator and through Sword and Staff, I've been lucky
>enough to see firsthand what these students are capable of. They are giving,
>dedicated, and just plain fun to be around. They've involved themselves in
the
>community by lending help when needed, raising money for worthwhile
causes, and
>they have become part of the*Adopt a Highway* program here in New York.
Given
>my experience with this organization at Polytechinic, I would wholeheartedly
>recommend APO to any college student. It's positive, it's fun, it serves the
>"greater good," and it is an organization that any student can be proud to
be a
>part of.
>
>Thanks for taking the time to posting up about APO. From my experiences with
>APO, I cannot say enough good things about this organization.
>
>All the best,
