The main thing with bids is check to see how common they are in your section/
region. I get the sense from the past discussions on this issue on APO-L and
at conventions is that the bid system is far more common among east coast
chapters than those west of the MIssissippi.
When I was Section chair for 91 I had chapters that used a bid system./ Not
to restrict people from pledging... but used at the end to determine if a
pledge completed the program successfully. It allowed for a formal
consideration to take place. The votes held usually had to be anywhere from
66% to 75% of the votes in the negative to hold someone out of APO.
(Generally a difficult number to reach as we will see when the Senate
votes(just my polictical side coming out). In my years as an active brother,
advisor, and Section chair, I have only seen 2 pledges in 10 years not
initiated. For some chapters that is two too many, for others it is a low
number.
You need to find what works for your chapter. People read the by-law of
"Chapters have the right to determine their membership." Very differently.
Just athought.
