Brothers,
I belive that the pledging experience should be a time for people
to learn about Alpha Phi Omega's members, and tradtionions as well as its
history and structure. In keeping with this, I am opposed to giving out
"bids" for pledging. I pledged at a university with a rather challanging
pledge program, but that program does two things. First, it builds
memebers who love APO and who know a lot about it. Secondly, it gives
people an opportunity to be part of the oragnization (see the good
stuff and the bad, not just painted-on rush smiles) and decide if it is
where they belong. I will honestly admit that we frequently have people
drop out of pledging because they feel that the oraginzation isn't right
for them, but I belive that it is better for them to make that decision
than it is for us to not allow them to pledge in the first place. Also,
the bidding process tends to open up opportunities for personal issuse
between one or two people to stop a person from becomeing involved with us
and in the end we are the ones who loose out.

In L, F, and S,
Julianne
