As far as I know Nationals does host events during the summer, they are
called CPW's, and look at the attendence levels of those. I agree that
maybe somthing like a convention might spark more interest then a single
(but great and very productive) workshop, but there are too many other
varibales to consider.
Instead of spending time try to coordinate something so large time should
spent encouraging section chairs or region directors to hold smaller
events during the summer (ie summer picnics). If these we better
publicized then when people go home (if different then school) they will
know about the picnic (or other events) in the section they live or are
spending thier summer in. If they have knowledge of it they may go and
meet people they may not otherwise.
so my point is the system that is in place now is not in need of drasctic
change such as moving a convention to the summer, but effort needs to be
put into planning and promoting events that are already in place (Section
picnics, DC on the 4th, CPW's, summer service projects, and others). With
these events better publized maybe people will be willing to roadtrip to
far away places to meet new people, thus achiving on of the goals of
nationals.
