I can resist no longer! The longest discussion in Minneapolis dealt with
the report of the Membership Reference Committee, and I chaired that
portion of the Convention for six long hours.
I will say only two things. First, I think this reference committee did
one of the finest jobs I have ever seen such a committee do, and the
standing ovation they received at the end of the debate was very well
deserved.
Second, although I was somewhat frustrated because I had a party to
attend that night (that obviously ended long before the discussion did),
I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was fun, for me at least, and
challenging. Of course, I didn't have to put up with me as the chair
since I wasn't a delegate!
Without expressing an opinion on the underlying discussion (which I think
is better addressed by you actives), I will simply observe that every
convention has its lengthy debates and that everyone who participates
does their Fraternity a great service no matter what the outcome.
Finally, to those of you who were there and who remember my introductory
remarks as we began that portion of the legislative session, I will say
that Kenny did not survive that episode, but he will be back for the next
(don't ask: if you weren't there, you won't understand).
