I attend the University of Texas at Austin (Alpha Rho chapter) and we do
both a lot of service as well as fellowship events similar to the
Homecoming parade that you mentioned. Our chapter is the proud owner of
the world's largest Texas flag (75' * 125') and we present it at all of our
school's home football games as well as at pep rallies and parades. We
feel that these events are of great benefit to our chapter. Many students
have seen us run the flag out onto the field at football games and become
interested in the chapter. While many people know us as the "organization
that does the flag" it also gives us an opportunity to explain a little bit
more about our main goal. As for how this effects our pledging
requirements, it does not count as service hours, but it falls into the
requirements for the friendship aspect of our cardinal principles. Many
pledges have joined to run the flag, but they end up coming back because of
our service program and the people that they have met.
