Great to read about merit badge colleges,
everyone please send more details,
off-line to this address is OK.
The Piedmont Triad Alumni Organization is sponsoring our inaugural merit
badge college for the Old North State Council BSA on 2/20/99. We are
coordinating between the scouts and the host, Phi Kappa Chapter at the
University of North Carolina Greensboro. Phi Kappa's role as host is to
recruit, organize and coordinate other UNCG student groups to serve as
the merit badge counselors. Each group is presenting a merit badge that
is related to the specific interest of the group.
The plan, similar to Alpha Gamma Iota's, is for the scouts to choose from
one of eight badges offered during the one-day only event (four contact
hours with the groups). The scouts will be provided a list of merit
badge requirements to work on prior to the event and they will be given
credit for requirements completed at the college.
To do this, chapters can serve as counselors themselves, or organize
other campus groups like this one. The alumni are involved with this one
with the idea of offering merit badge colleges on different campuses on
successive weekends in the future.
This is a great way to expose scouts to APO, to involve a chapter on a
campus and to expose actives to alumni associations. Besides that, some
great scouts will get a little closer to completing their Eagle. Seems
like a winner all around. Wish us luck!
