I have to agree that hotel is important.
However, doings in the area is also a factor, to an extent, especially in the
case of Nationals. I think a lot of people would agree with my feeling that
if I fly 2000+ miles to a new city for 5 days, at some point I wiuld like to
get out and look around for a bit. In the three nationals I've been to,
mostly it was the last full day of the conference when I got out. When I stay
for New Years, the whole day is open to sightsee.
With similar respect to Regionals, i have been helping the Albany bid out by
doing research into the New York Winter Wonderland that this part of the
state is so good for, as well as looking into First Night. Let's just say
that there is way too much to list here on everything that can be done for
fun and relaxation in the area before, during, and immediately after the
conference.
For Albany First Night alone this year, I just bought my admission to the
festivities for $10. For this I get to go to any or several of 40 sites in
downtown to listen to any of 300+ performers. Plus free skating, a road race,
fireworks, a grand scale musical chairs game and a several-block long conga
line right before midnight. And that's for starters. The event board for the
city told me yesterday that next year's first night will be at least 2x as
large....
But I do agree that the conference itself is most important, and most
everyone sticks with the conference during the hours it's going on. But you
must consider the balance too. Even if your opinion is different, you must be
open to cater to what your guests want.
And boy will we have it. :)
Good luck to all bid teams for all sites at Minneapolis.
