Julianne,

Beta Pi is in the same boat is Upsilon (we closed in '75). One of the
earliest things we did was check the archives. The problem was not red
tape, but just lack of stuff (all of which fit into a manilla envelope).
yet we have managed to piece together some of our history. Here's how:

1. One of our faculty advisors was an advisor to the old Beta Pi chapter
in the late 60s until it folded in the early 70s. if you have any alumni
or former advisors on the faculty or staff, go talk to them.

2. Get a list of alumni from Nationals. It may not be up to date, but
it's a start. We were able to track down a couple alumni, including a
chapter founding father. Got search tips from another (see item #4).
3. Ask the school's alumni association if their alumni records list what
organizations they belonged to. If so, make a copy and start reaching
out to them.

4. Go to the school yearbooks. Look up APO and start taking down names
and years. Then check those names against the alumni directory. This is
painstakingly slow, but worth the effort. we found many alumni that
way. We also learned a bit of chapter history . Besides who were
members, the yearbooks gave examples of projects the chapter performed,
awards to the chapter, etc.(example: in the '50s, Beta Pi received
national recognition for founding a boy scout troop at a home for
handicapped children). This info could also be a nice conversation
starter when you make contact with your alumni.

As I have alluded to, alumni are your best source of chapter history.
They were there. They love to tell the stories about the "good old
days." They may also have some old chapter artifacts.

Our results to date: We have about 10 alumni on our electronic mailing
list. Many more on our "snail mail" list. Some of them want to form an
alumni association and help out the chapter when and where they can. We
have heard a few stories about the old chapter. We're also finding that
in terms of chapter character, or personality, we have a few
similarities to the old chapter as well.

Hope this helps.

LFS,

Phil Dore
