> Why NOT a house?

1) If you had a house how are you any different from a social Greek with a
philanthropy program? Many of APOs best and brightest are here because we
are NOT Greek.

2) If you've got a house you've got to insure so instead of having 50 dollar a
semester dues, you've now got 500 dollar a semester dues to pay the mortgage
and insurance. Right now we are a "club" and hence can use the school's policy.
(Service Fraternity == club for insurance purposes)

3) If you've got a house you've got to take care of it, which means cleaning,
repairing, and maintaining... all the time and effort for that comes at the
expense of your service program.

4) The potential for abuse (you fill in the blank here)

5) Rooming House laws. DO you want to go through permitting and inspections?
Have you read the laws for getting a permit in a lot of cities for a Frat House?
(If they let you have them at ALL)

6) Anti-Brothel laws. I believe in MA it's more than 5 unrelated women together
and it's a brothel by the legal definition. So you'll require a house mother
to beat those laws. That'll be about 30k a year + benefits.

7) Some forms of traditional values have large problems with unrelated men
and women living together. coupled with a co-ed chapter....

8) Incorporation, bonding, audits, taxes all then need to happen/be done.

9) Think the neighbors are crabby now about the noise... just wait till you
put Greek letters over the door...

10th and Finally: where you getting the 300,000 to 400,000 dollars a house
costs?

just a few thoughts... I know if my chapter had had a house, we'd have lost
everything that made us NOT Greek because of the above and also because
our school would have then forced us into IFC. *ick* APO benefits immensely
by being outside the "Greek System". How many of you were in a Spring Pledge?
Have a house you'll loose those... IFC rush rules won't let that happen...
the loses in most areas are too great compared to the minimal gain in other
areas

Most of you in efforts to get houses would crash and burn on #2, you might get
as far as 5, but 10 is the killer... a frat house is a very expensive
proposition
to have...
