I don't think that chapters should have a "House" in the sense of a
structure which is paid for all or in part by the chapter with it's
treasury. There are several chapters in which brothers from those chapters
have gone out and rented an apt(apt, house, whatever) together and in many
chapters I surmise(including mine) we have an apartment which every term,
brothers move out and brothers move in while non-brothers are allowed to
move in as well. However, brothers individually renting an apartment(or
owning it even) and the chapter as a whole owning a house are fruits from 2
different gardens.
If the chapter owns a house, and YOU(as a brother from that chapter) don't
live there...Why should YOU pay for it? If the chapter has an event that
your dues are paying for, everyone is entitled to it's benefits, and shares
in it's responsibilities as well. If the chapter owns a house, besides the
facts that the dues skyrocket...if someone does something stupid(i.e.
hazing, drinking, just something stupid) the entire chapter can be put to
blame. Therefore if you personally don't live there, someone can still
come up to you and say "HA HA! You're a brother from Alpha Phi Omega."
It may be a good place to hold a meeting for some chapters, however some
may be heavily distracted. I know with my chapter, our chapter office
became too distractive because of the phone, computer, windows, and other
familiar elements in the office. We moved our meetings to an alternative
location partly for those reasons and partly for space.
Anyhow, I've said my piece...May all your days and nights be as excellent
as those that came before it :)
P.S...Oh yeah...comments/suggestions/corrections can be sent to me. :) Any
flames can be sent to devNull@nowhere.com. :=)
