Songs often repeat significant phrases!
How is that bad lyrically?

Besides, "true to" implies a commitment to the ideals of the organization,
while "men of" and "joined in" only imply membership.

That is why there were efforts made to make this change LONG BEFORE THE
FRATERNITY WAS CO-ED (even when there was only one verse).

Such a change would avoid problems with administrators who look at "men" to
mean only males; and provide a stronger statement.
