Well, I was hoping to get this written and mailed out before the list
heated up, but it looks like I missed. With the proposals for
Nationals about to be announced and the discussions so far, I expect
the traffic on this list will heat up still more.
Here are a few tips that will help keep the discussion manageable so
the mail doesn't overwhelm people:
1. Read all of the messages from APO-L before your respond --
especially if you want to correct some factual information. Someone
else may have already posted a correction.
2. If you post more than once on a topic, try to make sure you are
posting something that is actually new and different. If you've made
your postion and logic clear and it didn't change someone's mind the
first time, repeating the same information & justifications probably
won't change them.
3. There may be some topics that you have strong feelings on. Please
try to resist the tempation to repsond to each and every message
expressing the opposing point of view. Excessive repetition of your
points can in addition to driving up the list traffic, be counter
productive to achieving your goal. If you annoy people with excessive
postings, they are less likely to pay attention to the content.
4. If you want to get a "sense of the list" on some topic, you may
want to consider putting up a survey and asking for personal reponses
and then compile and or/summerizing a the results and send them to the
list.
5. Make sure your post is on topic. As a rule of thumb, if there is no
direct mention of in your message, you should think carefully about whether
it's really appropriate to send to the list. The message might be
off-topic, or maybe you just need to spell out more explicitly how
this opinion of yours relates to the action APO should be taking.
And a reminder about some of the list guidelines (excerpted from the
message that goes out to new list subscribers):
2. All postings to APO-L must be related to Alpha Phi Omega. As a rule
of thumb, if you haven't mentioned APO in your post somewhere, the
message is probably off topic.
3. Many subscribers receive APO-L through their place of work or pay
services such as Compuserve or America On Line or have limited mail
quotas. As a courtesy to those who don't have unlimited net resources,
please try to keep your messages concise and to the point. Avoid using
excessively long signature lines (between 3 & 8 lines is typical).
Try to avoid posting messages that simply say 'me too.'
4. When you quote a previous message, try to include only those parts that
are necessary to make it clear what you are responding to. Also, make
sure you are attributing the quotes to the correct individuals.
5. Netiquette dictates private responses to private email. Please do not
post private mail to APO-L even if you can't find the recipients email
address. To get a list of the address for APO-L subscribers, you can
use the REVIEW command.
7. Please do not "flame" (insult) individuals over APO-L or in private
mail. Discussions will naturally bring disagreements, however,
rebuttals should always be made in a rational, logical and mature
manner in public or private. Argue about the points being made, not
people's character.
8. Please refrain from using any language that might be considered
questionable (even by the most conservative of us) on APO-L.
12. Subscription to APO-L is *not* limited to active brothers. There are
pledges, perspectives, petitioners and interested by-standers on the
list. Please do not discuss the details of any fraternity rituals when
you post to the list.
13. Most of the points above can be summarized by: Keep in mind the
principles which Alpha Phi Omega was founded on and be courteous
to the members of this list.
And finally some administrative notes so that things don't overwhelm me:
A. Normally, if your email address starts bouncing mail because you
are over mail quota or because there is a technical problem preventing
mail from reaching your site, I wait about 3 days for the problem to
corrected before I remove you from the list. If the list traffic gets
high, I will start removing people immediately on seeing mail errrors
in order to keep my mailbox from getting swamped.
B. Some types of mail errors are automatically handled by LISTSERV and
if your account generates too many errors in a short period of time
the LISTSERV program will unsubscribe you from the list.
If you find yourself removed from the list, it is because either A or
B has happened. If whatever problem was creating the mail error has
been fixed, just resubscribe. If you want to see what you missed,
