Anybody who has seen me on the list ffor the past 5 - 6 years or so knows where
I standon the issue, but I am going to restate the arguments that I have,
because to this date, I haven't heard a god argument against.
1. We are already "true to self and to each other", being "true to" Alpha Phi
Omega again is bad lyrically, uncreative and says nothing new. It makes the
Toast Song less meaningful, robs it of tradition, and if it were passed would
offend me deeply. Its another dumbing down of a song full of meaning to appeal
to some vague sense of "fairness." Well, I for one think the toast somg being
changed would be unfair to me.
2. I refuse to believe that changing to "True To" accomplishes anything, except
pissing off a bunch of brothers. You think everybody will sing "true to" after
the change? I doubt it. There will be chapters that will sing "men of", even at
Nationals in years to come. Chapters may sing whatever versions they want, not
because I approve, but because I really can't stop them nor force anybody to
believe in what I think isright. Its a free country. I can only argue my side.
3. There is a great degree of PC Police in any change argument. I for one refuse
to see a beautiful song change to meet the demands of modern "correctness". Why
don't we re-edit every movie and song because of something potentially offensive
in it? I don't want to be responsible for anything like that. That's right,
we'll throw musical freedom or traditional musical expression into the fire in
the name of tolerance!
