(1) I *really* don't think notification is necessary when we
synchronize the Athena and SIPB copies of /mit/sipb. I just got an
about-to-be-released notice and a done-with-release notice,
timestamped exactly 1 minute apart. Athena updates take about this
long, and they don't notify anyone, either.
(2) If we are going to send out notices, they should at least be well
written. I would suggest the following:
"The nightly backup of the SIPB locker is about to take place. You
may be unable to access files in /mit/sipb for the next couple
minutes.
-- SIPB"
and
"The backup is complete. Service to /mit/sipb has been restored.
-- SIPB"
Notice how I left out all technical details that might confuse people
("released to the world," indeed). We don't want a reminder designed
to keep people from panicing to make them panic because they don't
know what it means.
(3) 1:15 AM is not sufficiently late to qualify as "the middle of the
night." I would suggest 4:30 AM or thereabouts; that way, only the
relatively small number of people who are actually going to be awake
all night will see the message. :-)
