Backup procedure (revised, improved instructions)

jtkohl@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (jtkohl@ATHENA.MIT.EDU)
Tue Sep 4 11:55:01 1990

1) log into hodge (machine with exabyte drive) as root
2) change the local cell of hodge to sipb:
	echo "sipb.mit.edu" >/usr/vice/etc/ThisCell
3) obtain tokens for the sipb cell with appropriate privileges
4) backup the volumes needing backup:
	/afs/sipb/project/exadump/scripts/do-backups.csh
5) create two xterms for extended use
6a) in xterm #1, run the 'script' command to capture a copy of the backup
	procedure.
6b) in xterm #2, also run script; use a different file for the script output.
7) find the next tape to be used for the dump (the oldest one)
8) in xterm #1, run /afs/sipb/service/@sys/butc
9) in xterm #2, run /afs/sipb/service/@sys/backup.
in this window, type 'dump sipb full_X' where X is the tape number.
10) follow the directions in the butc window (insert the tape). Tapes
are writable if the red slider is NOT visible in the window.
11) when butc starts spitting out lots of stuff, sit back, relax, and read a
few novels. The dump should finish in about three (3) hours.
12) when finished, type ^C to butc and 'exit' to backup
13) exit the shells from the script commands, and copy the typescripts
	to /afs/sipb/project/exadump/last/{backup,butc}.<date>
