At about 11:30, rosebud2 did something strange.
bos status claimed everything (except the kaserver) were running fine,
yet machines were convinced they had lost volume location service and file
service from that machine.
Well, knowing of nothing better to do, I went into the machine room to see
if I could find something out. login was running fine, but I couldn't remember
the password, so remotely, I did a bos restart on the machine.
about five minutes later, the bos completed, claiming it succeeded in shutting
down things, but that it couldn't restart them.
At this point, I found mhbraun, and well, decided it would be a good
idea to call him.. :-)
at this point, login was wedged, the machine seemed wedged.
We rebooted, it couldn't find rz0 (the micropolis external disk). We then
noticed the disk was making noise.. we thought it was the fan, but weren't 100%
sure. We powercycled everything, and the machine cam up okay:
11/18/95 23:59:55 dir vnode 1: invalid entry deleted: ./.ircmotd (vnode 252,
unique 75100)
11/19/95 00:01:04 dir vnode 3: invalid entry deleted: ./src/checker.arp.nov12
(vnode 9358, unique 183392)
We should check up on the disk, it might be on its way to self-annihilation.
