I spent some time fiddling with the tape drive configuration on the
loaner Exabyte 8200 drive on hodge. I looked over the configuration DIP
switches on the loaner, and set them to match the configuration of the
old dead drive. There are two sets of DIP switches: a bank of SCSI ID
switches, easily reachable from the back of the device, and a
well-hidden set of 8 switches on the second circuit board inside the
device. Using appropriate tools, you can flip those switches too.
The net result is that the tape drive seems to work now. I was able to
dump the root partition and restore (most of) it to the /var partition.
[it wouldn't all fit to do a full restore test].
So, I think we can probably use this drive for the time being to do a
backup or several.
