A statement by Heinrich LaVole, new world leader:
Subject: UN Security Council Meetings
Date: Sat, 17 Oct 92 02:53:31 EDT
Dear Fellow Citizens,
At approximately 1:30 am on the morning of Saturday the 17th of
October, 2036, 11 nations of the United Nations Security Council voted
unanimously to elect me as their candidate to be the Earth's
representative to the Galactic Span.
What does this decision mean? I plan to be as clear as I can be
about the implications of this measure. If something is unclear or
seems wrong, please ask me and I will do my best to solve the problem.
Right now, it means that 11 nations of the world have turned
their military units over to me. It also means that I stand a
reasonable chance of being chosen by the alien delegation as being the
Earths representative. It also means that the nations which have voted
for me are willing to turn all of their resources and their governments
over to me if I am so named.
What does this not mean? This does not mean that I have just
been named dictator of all humanity. I feel I should repeat that. This
does not mean that I have just been named dictator of all humanity. It
does not meant that I can't be removed and it certainly doesn't mean
that the aliens can't choose someone else if they deem them to be a
better candidate. Only time will tell if I recieve this position or am
merely a 20 hour quirk of history.
What am I going to do? I am now going to attempt to unify this
planet. To make an entire host of rash decisions right away would be a
bad plan. I intend to leave many things as they are, at least for now.
I will make more announcements on what my ultimate goals are for the new
world government, when and if I am actually named as the representative.
The best action, and the one most desperately needed at this point, is
to end the war. I hereby call all nations conducting military manuvers
to cease fire and return their units to their prewar boundaries. Any
nation which refuses to do so will face the combined might of the 11
member nations which elected me. I will see this war finished one way
or the other. All nations have several hours to comply. It is my
intent to achieve a total cessation of hostilities by the time the fleet
arrives. If nations do not agree to comply with this, I will be forced
to militarily push them back to their prewar lines and hold them there.
I also ask all nations not present at the proceedings here to make a
decision on whether or not I am to be supported as their choice for
World Representative. I request being made aware of what this decision
is, one way or the other.
I further ask all organizations acting within coast city to
encourage the lawlessness and violence, to stop. I will not tolerate
such actions. This city is UN territory and I have been and still am
responsible for the well being of everyone here. I apologize for the
events which have occurred and pledge to try harder to get them to stop.
I call on all nations who have citizens here to help me in this.
Finally, I ask for your questions and suggestions. I will do my
best to make myself available to you. I want to hear your thoughts and
concerns. I want to hear from the 'special interest groups.' I want to
hear from people who do and don't support me. I want to hear from
everyone who has an opinion of how this planet is to be run. My
friends, we are about to enter a new age. There are many tests ahead of
us and there will be some amount of suffering. If I told you otherwise,
I would be lying. I do intend to keep this to a minimum. I believe
that humans are very adaptable beings and I think that this planet has
many useful things to offer to the span. I think that in a short amount
of time, we will be meeting all of the many races of the span on even
ground.
The first step in achieving this, however, is by being informed.
I would like to be informed. This means that you, the people of the
world, will have to inform me. There are a great many things that I do
not understand about how this planet works. I will need much
enlightenment in order to reach the best decisions.
I ask you all to consider these matters. Tommorrow at this
time, we will be part of a new reality.
Thank you for your attention,
Heinrich LaVole

My Fellow Argentinians, and indeed, People of Earth,
We at the dawn of a new era.
In recognition of Herr Heinrich LaVole's election to the position of
world leader by the eleven sitting members of the UN Security council,
I, Michelangelo Montoya, give final control of our country's
resources and military forces to Herr LaVole. Furthermore, I would
request a plebicite be held in Argentina to affirm Herr LaVole's
role as world leader of earth, and I welcome any and all comments
concerning his selection.
With a world leader in place, international war will end shortly,
and our friends in The Span have promised that world hunger will be
eliminated.
With Herr LaVole's election, peace and prosperity are guaranteed to
all the members of humanity, and a new golden age can begin.
We must all join together to face the stars. Let us rejoice that we
can.
Your Countryman and Fellow Citizen of Earth,
Michelangelo Montoya
MY RESPONSE IS BREIF, AND WILL BE FOLLOWED TOMORROW BY A MORE IN-
DEPTH ANALYSIS, ONCE I HAVE TALKED TO MORE PEOPLE. PLEASE PRINT
IT ON THE OP ED PAGE.
Fellow world citizens,
It seems that the UN Security Council has made a decision and
seems to have done so reasonably legitamately. However, we should all
be very wary, and keep on top of things. I urge you to force your
governments to talk to you. You should hold meetings to determine if
this is what you want for your world.
Please keep in mind that the UN Security Council's actions of
the past few days have been of questionable integrity. It has come to
my attention that while Mr. Drake was still in the running for world
leader, he received the highest vote of confidence of any candidate.
Then, the Security Council elected to have him removed as a candidate.
My facts may be in error; I will try to confirm them for you tomorrow.
But if this is the case, then clearly the UN is acting for their own
political interest, and not necessarily for the world citizenry (keep
in mind that the two are not mutually exclusive).
I have not yet formed an opinion on this matter. I know that
I rebuke the UN Security Council for their actions and I know that
I question the validity of their choice. I know that the concept of
one person speaking on the behalf of all the world frightens me. I
have not yet decided whether Mr. LaVole is the right choice for this
dubiously valid position. I hope that he is.
Peace to the World,
-Lord Byron
