Pomp and Circumstancial
Swords and Sorcery at MIT in 1990
Assassin Game, Post Finals, May 24 to June 2 1990
It's May of 1990 in Cantabridgia and Spring is busting out all over. The
Massachusettes Institute of Thaumaturgy is preparing for graduation, the class
of 1940 is having its 50th reunion, and the area is overflowing with
dignitaries, speakers and alums. The Institute has just finished its final
exams, and the class of 1990 is looking forward to graduation. Unfortunately,
graduation may have to be delayed a short bit as the much admired President of
the Institute, Paul E. White, '54, recently died in a freak boating accident
and will have to be replaced before the ceremonies can commence.
With the gathering of alumni for the graduation ceremonies comes also the
Triennial Convention of The Most Ancient and Honorable Guild of Sorcerers, to
be headed by The Western Grand Master. It was promising to be quite a show
until just a few nights ago when Sir Humphrey Merlin, the Western Grand
Master, died of natural causes in his sleep. The Convention has taken on a
more somber tone since as the Guild has begun the search for a new Master.
Deaths indeed seem to be much the rage these days, as President White and
Grand Master Merlin have been joined in the heavenly choirs by the Most
Reverend Archbishop of Bosstown who died in a kitchen fire, and His Highness
Duke William, the Duke of all New England, who perished in a tragic hunting
accident.
And Bosstown has its own problems. It seems that someone is dissatisfied with
the rule of King Richard VIII and has been taking steps to terrorize the
people of Bosstown. In fact, just last week a group of terrorists attacked
one of His Majesty's ships in the harbor and vandalized it while chanting.
Witnesses have said that they thought the culprits were Red Aborigines. Lord
Thomas Magnus, P.I., Chief Criminal Investigator for His Highness, the Duke of
New England and his assistant Master John Quincy Adams, a forensic Sorceror
have been called in to investigate the attack, as well as some other recent
events.
And what of the rumors of an edict from the King? What about the unexplained
disappearance recently of several ships carrying valuable cargo back to the
heart of the Empire? And there are rumors of strange happenings in the
basements of the Institute. Is someone working on Black Magic rituals? Does
this have anything to do with the many reports of strange lights in the night
sky? Are these strange spirits, or a return of the mythical "Visitors from
the Sky"? Are these the cause of the recent sightings of crows, falling out
of the sky dead? Worse yet, some say it's a plague...

This is the world of Lord Darcy, where magic is a skilled vocation and
technology and science have hardly been explored. A world where Richard the
Lion-Hearted did not die from his wound in battle in 1199, but survived to
establish one of the most stable empires the world has ever seen, ruled over
today by Richard VIII, by the Grace of God, King and Emperor of England,
France, Scotland, Ireland, New England and New France; King of the Romans and
Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Defender of the Faith, et cetera. A world
where early researchers, more interested in astrology and magic than astronomy
and physics, concentrated on codifying the Laws of Magic. A world where
science never really developed. In this world, the finest school on the
Western Continents would have specialized in Thaumaturgy, not Technology. It
is within this topsy-turvy world that you enter "Pomp and Circumstancial,"
brought to you by Rob Gates, Lisa (Kroh) Miller, Adina Adler, and Mike Patton.
"Pomp and Circumstancial" is a real-time, real-space, nine-day long
role-playing game sponsored by the MIT Assassins' Guild. The game will run
from Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, June 2.
