The following is the handout we gave out at wrapup, and all the awards
rif and I could think of after losing the list we read; anyone with
interesting stories or quotes that they want put in the archives for
ever and ever should feel free to send to calypso-gms.

Calypso - The Wrapup
``Pirates, Voodoo, and Virtual Reality'' is the stupidest genre I've
ever heard of. --Mark Rousculp
Warning: The following contains only the briefest of summaries of each
of the major groups and characters in game. There's a lot more to
most of it, so feel free to ask other players/GMs what was up. We hope
you enjoyed Calypso. We certainly did. Thanks for a great
time.
Some Groups
Amulets: The Hound can bind the Fox can bind the Hare can bind the
Tortoise can bind the Hound. Meserole wants them all to become a loa
again. Hound: Hezzah Flint. Fox: Blackbeard (Shifty Jim). Hare:
Maurice St. John. Tortoise: Ionesco.
Cabal: One of the two groups trying to do rituals at the Circle of
Stones, the Cabal should have started out with all the big powerful
nasty rituals, like Annihilation (not a destroy the world ritual, just
amazing powers over death) and Control. The Governor, Soufritte, and
Dogface Johnson are in this one. Sadly, they had half their pages
stolen and scattered by Webster Greenmartin, the Nuisance, pre-game.
Calypso Chamber of Commerce: Trying to build a magic dimensional gate
to let them get cool stuff from all over the multiverse. Davy Jones,
who's been to the Sunken City once, starts this up, and gets Hanna
Laveau, Matt, and Anthony Hargrave to help. They need something from
another dimension, and from very far away in this dimension to
calibrate their gate --- moon dust would be ideal.
Coterie: The ``nice'' Circle of Stones plotters, they should have had
the tamer, easier rituals, like Bliss and Assurance. Benjamin Bragg,
Ankara, Middle Ed, Gilbert Fauntleroy, and Hezzah Flint. Sadly, they
had half their pages stolen and scattered by Webster Greenmartin, the
Nuisance, pre-game.
Dreamers (Anti-Tech Squad): Aida-Wedo, (the real one), has been
sending them dreams warning them that the advent of technology will
spell the eventual downfall of weirdness like loa. If they get some
coconut-and-bamboo devices and get them powerfully cursed by the loa,
then the other devices will start to malfunction. Big Ed, Gobanji,
and Sixteen.
Dreamers (Kid's Metaconcert): The loa about to be born, and a
long-dead loa who wants to return are battling in these kids. They've
been granted sorcerous power, which if they use (``zotting'' people
who play games with them and giving them psych lims, memory packets,
etc.) allows the new loa to be born. If they refrain from zotting,
this allows the old loa to tap their power and come back instead.
Galactic Security - Anti-Rifting Branch: They want to shut down anyone
messing with Rifting, especially the Shpaetzl. Corinnia (Small Ed),
their agent on Earth, alerted them to Shpaetzl heading to Calypso's
dimension, and the rest of them gated in using their emergency No
Going Home gates. Led by George, they also included Giovan Montard
and Rina Trevor.
Icelandic Intelligence: Iceland gets no respect. Well, if psi was
just a little more powerful on Earth, that'd be different. They're
here to steal the Hearts of Earth, Fire, and Water (well, there is no
Heart of Water) and take them home to power psi, by putting Congruence
Forcers on the Hearts. Led by Joey, they included Vermus, Maurice
St. John, Small Ed, and one of Mack Sharkey's personalities.
Infinite Chain: Ages ago, Giovan Montard invented and used the
Tanglyph Device to connect himself to people in adjacent dimensions.
This process kept extending, making a chain of people who would ask
each other's advice on things. However, one end became increasingly
Good and one increasingly Evil, and they've been battling it out for a
couple dimensions now. If either Good (Jonathon Lisbett) or Evil
(Serviteur) wins, the whole chain becomes good/evil. If Giovan gets
them to merge, the chain becomes a neutral ring.
Loa Binders: Ichabod Cartier, Joallyn Fleming, and Travelling Jane are
all sorcerors out to bind loa. They need to do this at a Heart, which
means Fire (for Ogoun Bhathala) or Stone (for all the rest) or at a
piece of the Moon (which Ichabod has a plan to get).
Pirate Feud: Red Hans, first mate of the Osprey, and Leroy Fitch,
first mate of the Blackheart, each have half of the Blood Map, which
will lead a man to his heart's desire. The crews of the ships are
competing (brawls, treasure, captive maidens, etc) to see which one
ends up with both halves; Cornelius Lisbett is overseeing the feud.
Plants: World Assassins' Guild games often have a couple of plants in
them to gently nudge things in the correct directions: the Ace and the
Damned Nuisance. These two plants have noticed that their links to
the GM have gone down, and have decided it would be fun to try to help
all the plots (for the Ace, Abini Lozos) and thwart all the plots (for
the Nuisance, Webster Greenmartin).
Shpaetzl: They've been helping Earth technology along for the past
eight thousand years since they were stranded there, so they could
finally get back to their dimensional laboratories in the Sunken City.
Upton Long (Red Hans), Lourdes' sysadmin, helped set things up so that
the Calypso game projected here. Also included Bone Dancer Matou,
Mack Sharkey (hey, haven't we seen him before?) and Garmonde (their
Gremlin). If they can get the Sea Witch's head and stick it on
Ankara, they can learn the song that lets them into the Atlantis
control room.
US Air Force Intelligence: They'd like to get dimensional technology
for the Air Force, ideally by getting to Atlantis and then gating bits
of the tech there home. They are Colonel Jack Tremont (Snake Talker),
Colonel Jack Tremont (Brute Marks), Odessa, and Hob; a fourth (fifth)
would have been Bernard Fleming, but he fended the projection off.
Usual Suspects: Some time ago, the Gold Bands threw the Usual Suspects
in an oubliette together. They spent the night plotting, decided to
work together and fake a ``master thief,'' the Black Adder. In
addition to leaving mash notes for Ankara and robbing the holds of
boats with their Clever Plans (they can do spiffy thief things
together), they have a Plan to steal the island using a bunch of
gunpowder, a paddlewheel, and an erupting volcano. If they could only
get an ambassador to be willing to buy the island, they'd be all set.
These are Ichabod Cartier, Anton Fauntleroy, Long Legs Spider, and
One-Eyed Jack.
X-Bureau: These guys spend their lives stopping the Earth
destroy-the-world and rule-the-world plots. Years back, they nuked
Hong Kong moments before the AI there got out to convert the world
population into useful organic parts. They're kinda paranoid, and
want to make sure that nobody brings home even more destabilizing and
dangerous weird shit. Led by Webster Greenmartin, they also include
Henri LaFitte and Pitch Cargill --- and their helpful Hunter-Series
construct, HK-457, aka Shango Querso.
The Loa
Ogoun Bhathala: Once one of the three great powers that created
the universe, this poor Loa has been bound and beaten by mortals for a
long as anyone can remember. His plan, hatch the ``egg of fire''
(nuclear warhead) that is floating on the sea (nuclear sub) and eat
its power in order to escape his bondage.
Guede Ratalon: A Loa tragically in love with Grans Bwa but
unable to do anything about it because of his position, Guede's
plan is to become mortal for a day and let his responsibilities pass
to another loa.
Mavangar Ile: Father of Tina, the governor's dead wife,
Mavangar has a plan to get the children of his blood to sacrifice to
other loa enabling him to steal their powers.
Manman Brijit: The judge of the loa game. It falls upon this
poor loa to make sure none of the others get anything accomplished.
Agwe L'orage: Agwe's secret plan is to convince Grans Bwa
to join with her rendering them both immune to the loa game. Of
course, it would be nice if Grans Bwa did it in such a way as to give
Agwe total control over the double entity.
Grans Bwa: Tempted by Agwe's plan, her goal is to figure out
what secrets Agwe is holding back and make sure she isn't
smothered in the joining.
(squooshed) Aida-Wedo: Mobius The AI in charge of the master
game computer back on Earth. Like all AI's, he eventually goes
megalomaniacal and hatches a plan to take over a loa in Calypso, build
a physical dimensional gate, and fly the loa back to earth where he
could then rule as a god.
(squooshed) Shango Querso: HK-457 The AI hunting AI
infiltrated by the X-bureau into the game computer. HK-457's mission: kill
all AI's. Shango's mission: kill all other loa. They make a great
team.
Pirate Ship: Blackheart
Blackbeard: Shifty Jim Johnson, the man who stole Blackbeard's
magic beard. Looking for the Crown of the Pirate King. Starts with
the Fox amulet.
Leroy Fitch: Has half of the Blood Map which will lead a
man to anything he wants. Starts a feud with the Osprey for the other
half. Wants Henry Morgan's ship, and wants to stop un-squooshing so
technology will continue to function.
Big Ed: A musician searching for the mystical Song of
Everything, with which he will be able to transcend this shabby
physical existence. Owes a life debt to Dogface Johnson, and part of
the Dreamers (the anti-techs).
(squooshed) One-Eyed Jack: A hacker who's so pissed off that he
didn't get into the WAG tournament finals that he hacked his way in
anyway. One of the Usual Suspects. A Lisbett.
Dogface Johnson: A member of the Cabal.
(squooshed) Small Ed: Kristjan Holmjarn of Icelandic
Intelligence. Also, a member of Galactic Security. Also in the Kid's
Metaconcert. Also owes a life debt to Dogface.
Pirate Ship: Infernal Anne (zombie ship)
String Morgan: Hunting for the pirate crown and trying to
figure out what to do with the fact that he has his dead wife's head
(the Sea Witch) in a box in his hold. He's cursed that no man may
ever sail under him without a mutiny.
(squooshed) Bone Dancer Matou: One of the Shpaetzl, he really wants
the head in the box because the Sea Witch knows stuff about the sunken
city, and Bone Dancer secretly loved her before she died. His plan:
stick the head on Ankara.
Sam Jones: The real Blackbeard, he had his beard stolen by Shifty
Jim and Small Ed just pre-game. He really wants it back. Then he
wants the Pirate Crown too. And he wants Shifty Jim dead, dead, and
dead.
(squooshed) Hob: Lt. Anthony Willem of the US Air Force. Also
in the Kid's Metaconcert. He's both Odessa's brother and teammate.
Pirate Ship: Osprey
Manfred Zoster: Secretly Alan Hargrave, he's in love with Joallyn
Fleming and fighting his brother Anthony for her hand. He's a good
guy pirate who gives most of his proceeds to the orphanage. Having
the Pirate Crown would be nice too.
(squooshed) Red Hans: Upton Long, the guy who started this whole
mess by turning the game computer into a dimensional projector, he's
the commander of team Shpaetzl. He's got half of the Blood Map.
Matt: Secretly Alison Lloyd, the daughter of Sarah Lloyd. She's
been a karma sink for the Osprey for years now, since she forgot to
mention that she was female. A member of the Chamber of Commerce.
(squooshed) Joe ``Pitch'' Cargill: A member of the X-bureau who'd
really like to get rid of his cursed knife of niceness.
Ionesco: Trying to build a bathysphere to explore the deep, this
poor deluded cabin boy is totally in love with uncaring Ankara. He's
also building a hat to teach other cabin boys the basics of sailing.
He's got the tortoise amulet.
(squooshed) Abini Lozos: The WAG ``Ace'' plant and game mommy. As
the ``Ace'' her goal is to find all of the plots and make sure they
all succeed. Also a Rada Loco.
Pirate Hunter Ship: Queen Bess
Sarah Lloyd: Her sister, husband, daughter (she thinks), best
friend, and partner were all killed by pirates. She really hates
them. Among her plans: sink 'em, arrest 'em, steal their damned
Pirate Crown, curse 'em, unbury their treasure\ldots You get the idea.
Andrew Hargrave: Trying to make the difficult choice between his
love for Joallyn Fleming and his quest to become a priest of the great
and powerful Loa of the Sea. For the girl, needs to beat his brother.
For the loa, needs to destroy the sunken city, and smash the pirate
Crown.
(squooshed) Michael Ritton: Gregory Dow, wealthiest man on Earth,
who's about to die of an incurable cancer. He's also got the lowest
karma ever known. His dream, get into the game, become a pirate,
recover his submarine, wrap his karma around the bottom of the scale,
get rid of his illness, and write himself out of the game so he can
stay forever. Sadly he has no skills to do most of this. Good thing
he has a butler\ldots
(squooshed) Maurice St. John: Ingvar Isberg, of Icelandic
Intelligence, he's secretly Odessa's player's husband. He starts
with the Hare amulet.
Joallyn Fleming: Trying to choose between two brothers, her
life is angst. She's also trying to bind the loa with Cartier and
Travelling Jane.
Benjamin Bragg: A member of the Coterie, poor Benjamin is the only
member of the Kid's Metaconcert who's not an actual sorcerer. He's
also the son of Captain Bragg of the Invincible and has a number of
wacky plans to hose down all pirates.
George: Alfred Ogwise, an Oryx (highly intelligent fungal
construct) of the Galactic Empire. He's commander of the team here to
stop the rifters. (You think fungal constructs are bad? Before the
last re-write, he was a hyper-intelligent telepathic bacterium.)
Societe Bizango (Necromantic Cult)
Papa John: He's trying to recover the magic Sigil of the Lisbetts
which is in Hook's treasure. Also wants to thwart his sister and make
sure that Lisbetts return to the path of Bizango.
Long Legs Spider: One of the Usual Suspects.
Soufritte: A member of the Cabal, and meanness incarnate. Real name:
Angela Hargrave.
(squooshed) Vermus: He wants to study Serviteur and figure out
what's up with him. If he succeds, by killing him several times, he
can make himself an immortal zombie. Also, he's Smilla Saemundson of
Icelandic Intelligence.
Serviteur: Yup, he really was the ultimate incarnation of Evil.
one end of the Infinite Chain, he's here to turn everyone to Evil and
thwart Good. Before he became Evil, he was merely the evil Captain
Hook.
Societe Rada Loco (Druidic Cult)
Belle Miri: She also wants the Lisbett sigil and to thwart Papa
John. Also looking for the kid's of Mavangar Ile so she can bind
their Mojo and gain power over Mavangar\ldots
(squooshed) Snake Talker: Captain Jack Tremont, commander of US Air
Force Intelligence. He's a Lisbett.
Gobanji: He wants to steal cool body parts to take their
abilities. Also, one of those dreamers who wants to stop all
technology.
Ankara: Daughter of String Morgan, the last thing she wants to do
is marry the governor, after all, ``He's got to be over a hundred by
now.'' Her plan is to be kidnapped by pirates or the Black Adder and
imply that she was ``dishonored''. Also, she's in the Coterie and
wants to do the Ritual of Bliss.
Societe Konesans (Cabalistic Cult)
Hanna Laveau: A member of the Chamber of Commerce. She was
cagey enough for long enough that she managed to get Odessa named
Houngan at birth so that Odessa's life would be on the line instead of
her own in the festival. she speaks to her dead ancestors, but will
lose this power if she doesn't get pregnant.
Sixteen: He's one of the dreamers out to bind technology.
Cochon Gris: A ``tainted rocklord''. Rocklord because he's one
of the first servants of Earth from way back in the beginning and
wants to destroy the oceans. Tainted because he fell under the sway
of the Dimensional Inbetweeners and wants to loose their evil upon the
world. He'd like to get to the Sunken City and open the plug at the
bottom of the ocean, draining it all down the Maelstrom.
(squooshed) Odessa: Lt.~Samantha Toccata of the US Air Force. She in
the Kid's Metaconcert. Her husband is tragically a member of
Icelandic Intelligence.
(squooshed) Middle Ed: A member of the Coterie. He also has a love plot with Travelling Jane's player.
Locals
Arnold Rawley: Governor and leader of the Cabal. He's bad news,
but he's not a sorcerer.
Bernard Fleming: He's 119 years old thanks to a deal he
made with Grans Bwa. If he can get rid of his age and make himself 20
again, he gets to be immortal. If not, she gets to eat him. He can
transfer years of age to other people. He's the main local sorcerer
and wants to be governor. One of the Air Force tried to squoosh into
Fleming, but was defeated by his amazing sorcerous powers.
Hezzah Flint: He knows that he's in the Coterie. He doesn't know
that he's the Heir to the Throne of France. He starts with the Hound
Amulet.
(squooshed) Mack Sharkey: This hapless Gold Band started out as a
loup-garou (werewolf), who had both K'ssha (a Shpaetzl tech) and Einar
(of Icelandic Intelligence) projected onto him. This caused some
personality clash, during which he also absorbed the somewhat broken
personality of Edouard St. Jean (who died playing Bartlett Cimaroon in
the first VR game Beyond the Faraway), whose initiative Mobius
stole to become truly independent.
(squooshed) Brute Marks: Captain Jack Tremont, commander of US Air
Force Intelligence. Yes, there are two of them. He's building
coconut powered power-armor. He's a Fleming.
Rina Trevor: A Galactic with a vision of the future. A future in
which she rules the universe. She's here to follow the Galactics to the
end of the Dimensional technology plot and then take it all for
herself.
Cornelius Lisbett: Bar owner and judge of the pirate feud. He
wants to recapture his past days of glory by getting a crew and a ship
and sinking them all at sea having done a big Mojo ritual. The
result: The Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship sailing the seas for
eternity.
Jonathon Lisbett: Yup, he's the ultimate incarnation of Good. he
wants to stop Evil and help his friend Tina the Harmonica. He
wouldn't mind being the head of the Lisbetts.
(squooshed) Webster Greenmartin: An agent of the X Bureau, he's also
the ``Damned Nuisance'' plant for the WAG. His goal: find all plots
and stop them. X-Bureau's goal: Find all weird shit heading back to
Earth and stop it. He's quite happy to do both.
(squooshed) Garmonde: The Shpaetzel technologist, a ``Gremlin''.
She's a wacky practical joker who can build just about anything. A
Hargrave.
Davy Jones: Shipwright and leader of the Chamber of Commerce.
He's the son of a sea serpent and so survived the first trip down to the
Sunken City pre-game.
Anthony Hargrave: A member of the Chamber of Commerce, Hargrave is
trying to build the ever-popular multi-shot musket (disk gun). He
also wants to shut down the orphanage so he can take it to the moon
with Ichabod Cartier (to get moon dust for the CCC gate).
Meserole: A smith. He was a loa from long ago who bound his
essence into four amulets moment before losing the loa game several
iterations ago. He's trying to get the four amulets together and do a
heinous ritual to get pieces on the loa game board before this
festival is over, so he can be a loa again. The rum salesmen both work
for him; tainted rum in blood sacrificed to loa was important.
(squooshed) Denise: More than just the town drunk, Denise is the
insane agent of the God of Dreams. (IE Mobius screwed with her mind
while she was in the VR game and now she's brainwashed to serve him.)
Ichabod Cartier: He's an ancient man made up of just Earth
and Fire, before Water intervened. He's trying to bind the loa and
needs to get to the moon to do it. He's also a Usual Suspect. He's
also enough of a sorcerer that he can just draw treasure maps to
things that are ``lost''.
(squooshed) Joey: Commander Elvar Thorlacius of Icelandic
Intelligence. He's in the Kid's Metaconcert.
The Harmonica: Tina Rawley, the governor's dead wife, killed him kind
of by accident. Also the daughter of Mavangar Ile. She wants to
learn the Song of Fire so she can become a Fire Spirit and not be
swept away at the end of the Festival.
(squooshed) Charlie Hopsin: Charlie is a tinker. He's also HP-214,
the emergency clean-up and error correction sub-process sent into the
game by Hong Kong and Lourdes. Charlie serves them both. His priority
one directive: Prevent Player Deaths..
Other Visitors
Anton Fauntleroy: A Usual Suspect. He's working with Meserole to
bring him back as a loa. He's the governor's son and is quite pissed
by his mother's death.
Gilbert Fauntleroy: He's up to most things his brother is up to
but is in the Coterie instead of the Usual Suspects.
(squooshed) Henri LaFitte: An agent for X-Bureau, he also wants to
make sure the French Heir dies. No more aristocrats!
(squooshed) Cecil Witherspoon: Gregory Dow's loyal butler, he was
taught at the International Butlering School the fine arts of computer
hacking, sumbarine design, virtual reality engineering and just about
everything else Gregory needs to make his dreams come true. He also
wants to spirit the French Heir off to England.
Inigo Cortez: A Spanish blademaster looking for one greater than
himself. The only better swordsman than him is, of course, Alison
Lloyd with whom he's destined to fall in love. He also wants to
remove his curse of bloodlust.
(squooshed) Ignacio Madieras: A Spanish Inquisitor looking for 10
honest men to report back to the Inquisition. Also Warlock, three
time Guild Grand-champion and member of the High Council. He'd like
to stop any collusion or infiltration by secret spy groups. His goal:
Make everyone stay in character.
(squooshed) Travelling Jane: She's a travelling healer with a
problem. As an empath (sorcerer) she takes damage whenever anyone
dies. Lots of damage when a loa dies. She's here to heal herself
enough hit points by healing others to survive the loa cycle. She's also
a industrial spy for one of Virtuomagic's competitors looking for
copyright violations, even if she has to create them herself.
Giovan Montard: A Galactic and master of the Tanglyph Device. He
used the Tanglyph to start the Infinite chain a long long time ago.
This whole battle of Good and Evil thing is totally out of hand so he
wants to put an end to it once and for all.
Still on Earth (E-mail Parts)
William Lourdes: GM and programmer, he's the poor guy who's
going to go to jail if all the players fail to wake up. His main
goal, get everyone home alive.
Hong Kong: When Mobius got shipped to Calypso no one was manning
the game computer and everyone would have died had Lourdes not installed
his backup copy of Hong Kong, the AI responsible for the destruction
of its namesake. Like all AI's, Hong Kong went vaguely megalomaniacal
during game break and started ordering Charlie Hopson to put a
brainwashing hat on all the players in the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GM Quotes:
``Oh please. He has a love plot with Sara Verilli. What more could
any first time player ask for?''
``We'll give him exactly what he requested, as an example to others.''
``Naw, it's easy. Players will do anything you want as long as you
tell them it's a mechanic.''
``When he said `I don't care for love plots', I don't think he meant
`I'm uninterested in resurrecting the spirit of an ancient witch,
contained in a head in a box, that the person who's body I'm
*possessing* was in love with but who'll help *me* take over the
universe.' ''
``So, how does anyone ever finish a ten day game without Laura?''
``Well, they're not really Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, they're an
accountant and his harmonica. But it's close.''
Player Quotes:
``Would you care to step outside? Gosh, I've never said that to a harmonica
before.''
Describing the use of a spell to save a ship: ``The Gods can be downright
accomodating when you give them a good swift kick in the arse.''
After Seduction: ``Someone's accusing you of having a pirate lover. I
figured if you were guilty, you might as well get to commit the
crime.''
``The loa are better than Kludgeite!''
``Nobody tells me what is going on. They just say Ralph do this,
Ralph do that. Oh no... I wasn't supposed to tell you my
name.''
``When I said `coconuts' I really meant `not plastic' not
`coconuts'...''
``I hid the mind control ritual. Would you do me the courtesy of
hiding the destroy-the-world ritual?''
``Either something's protecting the children, or the children are a
sorceror mob.''
``So Snake Talker comes up to me, and starts telling me this wacky
theory, about how aliens from another universe have set up a reserach
facility here, and I'm just like `Yeah, whatever, I don't even want to
know.''
