This sort of error seems to indicate that AFS didn't load properly.
Especially if you had a custom kernel, the 1.0A installation had some
problems during January with AFS working.
If your friend is still interested in running NetBSD, you might try
the 1.1 installation ("attach sipb; dvips -h duplex
/mit/sipb/doc/netbsd-install.dvi" to print out the documentation),
since it doesn't have to deal with the issue of AFS being consistent
with the kernel.
