NetBSD doesn't currently supported the 590 natively. The 590 has a 509
emulation mode which will work. While this is expected to change in the
future...

...NetBSD-current supports the SMC PCI EtherPower card (SMC 8432). We
(the SIPB) just got a PCI machine with one of these, and it seems to
work fine. SMC is generally considered more reliable than 3comm amongst
the NetBSD community...
