problems with xterm

All of a sudden this morning, I can't get an xterm to start on xlogin. I
log in and it goes all the way through but does not give me an xterm and
if I try to start one with dash it says New xterm exited with signal 11.
But when I log on a virtual console and do w, it says I have both p0 and
p1 running, but there is no xterm there.
