if you have SYNCCONFIG set in /etc/athena/rc.conf, it'll get the ip
address and hostname information from that file instead of from the
stuff in /etc.
also, i've never seen /etc/defaultroute used to specify the gateway.
usually that information is in /etc/mygate, or in /etc/rc.conf. for
whatever reason, you can't set that in /etc/athena/rc.conf.
you can use ifconfig -a to see what ip it's trying to use.
