I realize that there has been a sudden surge in linux-security traffic.
The reasons for this are:
1) A backlog caused by my being both very busy and out of town a bit
recently; I'm basically "batch approving" the last several days'
messages to the list to clear the backlog.
2) A thread with highly "religious" and contentious aspects: uid/gid
ownership of system files, configuration of the root account, etc....
Regarding 1): Once I've cleared the backlog hopefully things will return
to normal.
Regarding 2): I'm going to approve/forward most of the rest of the
pending messages on this thread (there are still several), mainly so
that everyone can see and digest all of the issues, opinions, etc., that
people have and thus be better informed when developing their own
personal approaches. I think it's fairly safe to say that most everyone
already has a slightly different approach to this, that there is no "One
True Answer," and that this thread is a good (though voluminous!)
"airing out" of these different ideas and opinions.
Thanks for your patience!
