This is not really a security issue. However, it is important to the
general readers none the less as it relates to the ability to recognize
the problem and to determine if you are experiencing the difficulties.
I am sure that in the 'heat of the moment' that some people find when
they discover a problem with the security of your system which may cause
you to leave out some small piece of critical information. However, if
you are going to say that "such and such does not work with Linux" then
please, please, include the revision information for both Linux kernel
and the "such and such" (if it is not the kernel itself).
Linux has two main branches for the kernels. Each has their own
characteristics. The developmental branch has many, many revisions to it.
Each revision defines the particular problems and what it will support.
If you are going to say that there is a problem with the networking of
the Linux kernel then it is important, if not critical, to include the
definition of the problem and the revision of the kernel that you are
reporting.
I am not trying to name names. I am only asking that when you do report a
problem that you include all of the information -- and the kernel
revision that you are using. Without that information, the problem
probably could not be re-created, identified, and almost certainly can
not be fixed.
Thank you.
