                  Initial Announcement of Formation

                              The Vision
                              ----------
The lack of security, both in prior and current distributions of linux,
is a major stumbling block for the acceptance of linux in a wide range of
situations where security is a major concern. We aim to take an active role
in improving the security of all linux distributions with a long-term effort
focused on the review and validation of security of each individual component
of current linux systems as well as a review process for new components to
undergo with the ultimate goal of providing systems that we will truly be able
to call "Secure Linux".

                               The Team
                               --------
This, in the following of the Linux tradition, is a completely volunteer
and open effort. Several of the best and brightest of the linux security
community have already promised to commit their efforts to the Secure Linux
Project, and we are hoping many others will follow. We are looking for anyone
interested in providing a long-term secure linux operating system.

                              The Status
                              ----------
This is the initial announcement regarding the Secure Linux Project and
is intended to reach those people that are interested in providing their
support and input in advance of the start of formal specification discussions
for the project. A mailing list is being formed currently to provide for
open communication regarding the project, and will be opened on March 4,
1996. The specifics of the projects will be discussed in this open forum
starting at that time, and actual work will begin shortly thereafter.

                             How To Join
                             -----------
If you would like to subscribe to the Secure Linux Project mailing list,
please send mail with a subject line of "SUBSCRIBE SLP" to davem+SLP@cmu.edu.
Please note that this is NOT the actual project mailing list; details will
be sent out regarding the list traffic in response to requests sent to that
address. Feel free to send any other comments regarding the project or your
interest in being a part of it to davem+@cmu.edu.
