I have been working with the people who develop PLP for the last 6 months now,
and we are using it here on our Sun machines as our Institute-wide printing
server. I have also been running it on my Linux machine.
The PLP people are very security aware and are even working on a totally new
distributed printing system that circumvents many of the current BSD-style
lpr/lpd problems.
I've found PLP to be a very good replacement for the lpr/lpd that came with my
Slackware distribution.
I also operate a U.S. mirror of the PLP distribution (the link into
ftp.iona.ie, in Ireland can be very slow at times).
