Are you trying to install linux on a laptop or a desktop? If it's a
laptop, try checking teh linux on laptops page.... (looks up address)
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
I have had several compaqs, and at time have had problems installing linux
on them. Most reccently I tried to install linux on a compaq Presario
1700t laptop. Here are the problems I ran into and how I solved them. I
could not boot the installer for RHAT 6.2 and it froze. Using TEXT mode
solved this, to access this, when the installer loads and comes up to that
first screen with the options (Before it runs /sbin/loader) there should
be an option for text usually it's at a prompt that something that says
something like boot:
just type text there...
Also, If you are installing it on the hard drive using the loopback option
(that's when you install RHAT onto the same partition with windows) you
may have problems if other 'virtual hard drives' (.img's ) are on that
disk
hope this helps some, if I made a mistake, someone feel free to pipe
in....

If this is so, then the future of the Linux OS is at stake. If not, I would appreciate some sort of help here. My best friend is very Linux literate, and is at his wits end on this thing. He, by the way, has a smaller and slightly earlier version of my computer, and has had a dual boot thing going for over a year.
