First check your computer is made of parts supported by Linux.  I think
you'll find a hardware list on Red Hat's site for example.

Then if you have (or can borrow) another PC and network cards you might
try a network install.  I've known this work on an old machine that won't
take installs from CD.  In a network install with NE2000 cards for RH 6.0
for example they don't auto configure and you have to enter the magic numbers
such as 0x300.  These either come from prior observation (hey - I found a use
for Windoze) or from guesswork.

Actual version descriptions for RH and Mandrake would probably help together
with whether it is exactly reproducible and whether your BIOS has your correct
disk geometry.
