I am using a 486/33 with an Adaptec 2842A controller. I have a Quantum
drive and a DEC TZK10 which I believe is actually a Tandberg drive. The
system runs fine except when I try to tar files to the tape. If I cd to
root and then tar the entire disk it will run for several minutes then the
tar process stops in a disk wait. I can see the process going into disk
wait several times but it usaully comes back out on the run queue.
Sometimes after only a few minutes and sometimes after about 10 minutes it
will go into disk wait and then hang. The system is OK but the tar process
is hung. I would like some ideas on where to look and what may be going
on. Also, might this be a tape problem or a controller problem. The same
configuration seems to work fine under DOS. I am using a 3 connector cable
with a terminator on the end of the cable and all devices have the
terminators removed. The following is the controller and devices as seen
by startup from 1.1.95 kernel. I have reduced the system to scsi and video
and have seen the same results. I have pulled a bootdisk for the 2842 and
used this and also see the same results. I will be happy to check anything
anyone suggest to find this problem. I have two days left to decide if I
want to keep the 2842 controller so I am in a rush to find a solution. Any
and all help will be appreciated.
