Jeff,

Do you have the mtrr registers set to something besides the default?
Sometimes video boards are shuffled around in the memory map, and
write-gathering doesn't work very well when it's over the AIC PCI
registers.  Just a long shot, but it caused similar symptoms here until I
chased it down.
