Hello, sorry to fill your inbox with mindless gibberish...
I have been running a RedHat Linux (6.1) system (5.2 prior to that)
for some time now. When I first set up the system, I tried
to attach a PMD external RAID to an adaptec aix7xxx based controller
(several, actually... controller changes have no effect on the problem
described next). The kernel version being run is the redhat linux
6.1 2.2.12-20 distribution kernel. I have also tried 2.2.14, no changes
there either.
The PMD raid device has a built in SCSI controller (of adaptec nature,
) and presents itself as a device to the SCSI bus.
Now, I can run this on the same box/controller/etc under NT, Win2K, or WIn98
so I'm pretty sure it isn't a cabling/scam/etc issue.
When I boot the box I get caught up in a SCSI timeout loop which looks
something like:
pid 20, scsi1, channel0, id 0,lun 0 0x00 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 1 abort (PID=20) time out -- trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 ch 0
.
.
repeat ad infinitum.
Now, this in itself proved to be a show stopper, but what finally led
me to drop you all an email was the second occurance of this...
Recently bought a 73 GB Seagate SCSI Ultra2/Wide LVD drive. Mounted it,
hooked it up to the controller, booted, and boom. Same exact scenario.
Now, I'm not sure what additional information I can give you other than
this is an Adaptec 3950 U2W controller... But by poking through
the source and turning on a bit of debug code, I could tell that it was
getting sstuck up in the scsi_obselete.c code.. specifically it was
hitting the DID_TIME_OUT routine, after which it proceeded to reset the
bus.
This is the only drive I have that behaves this way since the RAID. The
only thing I am aware of that these two devices have in common is their
size. Could there be any correlation?
I hope I haven't filled your inbox with useless garbage... I'd be happy
to help troubleshoot this in any way I can. If there is further
information I can provide, please let me know.
I can be reached at jconover@nwc.com
Thanks.
