You might try appending dtc_3181e=1 to the driver.

I have to say that I gave up, and bought an Adaptec 2904 to
run my scanner from. I'm currently waiting for a scsi cable to
be delivered to test it.

I didn't even get this. On multi-processor 2.2.x I see a hard lock
with nothing at all in the syslog.
