I figured it out the problem. Here it is for everybody's information:
I was trying
mt -f /dev/nst0 setblk 512
and it didn't work. I made a symbolic link from /dev/tape --> /dev/nst0
ln -s /dev/nst0 /dev/tape
and then used
mt setblk 512
and it worked.
Now "mt status" shows the correct block size.
