Hi Dirk,
I'm new to Linux (2 months now), but here's all I did:

	[root@linux /root]# modprobe -r st
	[root@linux /root]# modprobe st
	[root@linux /root]# lsmod
	Module Size Used by
	st 24896 0 (unused)
	sg 15084 0
	ncr53c8xx 50824 6
	[root@linux /root]#
	[root@linux /root]# mt -f /dev/nst0 status
	SCSI 2 tape drive:
	File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x25 (DDS-3).
Soft error count since last status=0
	General status bits on (1010000):
	 ONLINE IM_REP_EN
	[root@linux /root]#

If the drive wasn't hooked up to your SCSI bus when you
you use the following excerpt from "man proc":

scsi This is a listing of all SCSI devices known
to the kernel. The listing is similar to the
one seen during bootup. scsi currently
supports only the singledevice command which
allows root to add a hotplugged device to
                     the list of known devices.

                     An echo 'scsi singledevice 1 0 5 0' >
/proc/scsi/scsi will cause host scsi1 to
scan on SCSI channel 0 for a device on ID 5
LUN 0. If there is already a device known on
this address or the address is invalid an
                     error will be returned.

The following command shows which devices were found:

[root@linux dt.d]# cat /proc/scsi/scsi

[root@linux dt.d]#

I think I also changed the tape drive /dev/st0 and /dev/nst0
to 666 so non-root users could access the tape drive.

Cheers,
Robin

Dear SCSI list,
I need to connect a Tandberg DLT 7000 tapedrive to a
normal pentium machine via an Advansys SCSI card.
Can anybody tell me hwo I have to configure the kernel
in order to be able to access the drive with commands
like tar and mt ? And which device should I chose? /dev/st0 ?

Thanks in advance!

Dirk Petry
