Well, I am glad to hear you got your problems resolved.  I kept getting
the lock up that you got, but I am on a Pentium 100 system.  I've tried
using ncr53c8xx=safe:y,verb:2 but still same error message.

Since it's my main server, I can't afford to play around with it, so I've
substituted the old driver from 2.0.36 (v2.5f.1) in with 2.0.37 and voila!
It booted.  I guess I'll do a diff of the two versions to see changes
might have caused problem.
