With "ncr53c8xx=safe:y" it did the same thing.

# CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX is not set
CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C8XX=y
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_DEFAULT_TAGS=8
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_MAX_TAGS=32
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_SYNC=20

ncr53c8xx.c March 7 1999, version 3.2
sym53c8xx.c March 6 1999, version 1.3
This is my first attempt to use 2.2.3.

Not directly, but I did the original of this message to
ncr53c810@Colorado.EDU and linux-scsi@vger.rutgers.edu where it may be
seen by Gerard Roudier and others who have contributed to these
drivers.
Unfortunately, axp-list bounced the original because my "From: "
address has changed since I subscribed otherwise this would have been
visible in the "Cc: " headers.
Many thanks for the help
