reading about your problems reminds me to my installation of Linux!

I first tried to install 1.2.9 onto my machine with an Adaptec 2940. I got three
Alphaversions of the Adaptec 2940 Kernel. In my situation version 1 hangs the machine,
version 2 seems to work when there is no heavy harddisk usage and version 3 hangs the
machine too.
I installed Linux with the second alphakernel and installed all the sources too. After this
I downloaded the patchsources to get the kernel to version 1.3.21. Trying to compile a new
kernel on my machine always hangs it. The Adaptec 2940 started working on the harddisc and
after a while every activity stopped but the light on the controller stays on. After this
only a hard reset works to get the machine work again.
A friend of mine compiled the kernelversion 1.3.18 and we installed everything on my
machine. After this linux works quite good.
