When you have several machines, try to move the controller to another
machine, and see what happens. At least you could know if it is more
of a controller or a motherboard problem.
(although that would not really solve your problem of course)
I know someone who has reliability problems with a 1542C, but not the
multi detection problem. It causes strange corruption problems on his
filesystem, apparently during writing. (a r/o partition remains intact)
He has not found the cause, and it did not go away when swapping the
motherboard.
His drive works fine on my 1542B.
His cable and termination are OK. It works fine under DOS. Go figure...
