I use a Travan (TR-4) drive at home, and it's been nothing but reliable.
I think it might be a seagate tho.
I've heard travans will have problems if you don't retension your tapes now
and then. But like I suggested above, I've had absolutely no problems with
my drive, and I haven't done much retensioning.
Mine's "the scsi model", not the IDE, and I use it on an NCR53c815.
I've actually heard that DAT is best avoided, because the tapes are kind of
flimsy. I wanted to go exabyte (in part because we used to use them at
work, before we went DLT), but exabyte was just too expensive for home use.
