As far as I can remember, these were switches for different "customizations" -- mainly
for broken OSes, but that's just my opinion.
Linux doesn't need any of them so you can put them in their default setting.

Is this a DDS3 tape?

If the tape was written on a different drive, there might be a tape interchange issue
and it's hard to tell whose fault it is.  If it was written on this drive, then I suggest you
run a cleaning tape through the drive; if that doesn't work, try an other new tape and
if you still continue to have problems, return it to Sony for service.  The 9000 is a very
nice drive but I'm sure not every single unit out there is perfect.
