Hmm. Houston, we have a problem. This machine doesn't have any IDE devices
in it, so I can't boot it to have a look at the /proc filesystem. 

Can you point me at some code that I can stick some debugging in to see what
it's breaking on?  

FYI - It's an Intel R440LX motherboard - the Adaptec BIOS reports a 96
copyright date on it, so it's not all that wonderfully new.
