The Adaptec 1542CF is NOT an ISA Plug & Play card! Linux does however
PROPERLY detect the IRQ that the AHA 1542 uses, which in your case
conflicts with the secondary IDE channel.
There is, however, a way to set the IRQ: boot-up your machine and find
out which interrupts are yet unused (car /proc/interrupts or lsdev),
then shutdown -h and power-down the machine and enable the Adaptec BIOS
(DIP-switches 6 to 8 IIRC). Upon the next boot, you will be offered
"Press CTRL-A for SCSI-Select[tm] utility". Once you see that message,
press CTRL-A and choose Configure Adapter (or similar), you will have
the chance to set the IRQ to (IIRC) 9 .. 12 or 15. Save the settings.
If your Adaptec scans the SCSI bus upon boot while you don't need it,
you can safely disable the advanced configuration options "system boot
controlled by SCSI BIOS" and "dynamically scan bus for devices". You
can as well - after setting and saving the new IRQ - shutdown the
machine again and disable the BIOS by setting the DIP switches
appropriately. See the manual or the bottom side of your Adapter, there
should be a self-adhesive label explaining the switch settings.
