IBM DCHS: 16 MByte/s write, 17 reading
SEAGATE cheetah 4LP: 14 MByte/s r/w

In general:
    5'400 rpm 5-8 MByte/s
    7'200 rpm 9-12 MByte/s
   10'000 rpm 14-17 MByte/s

You can see some benchmarks (along with a hardware RAID product)
at http://www.dilog.ch/3xfr/benchmarks.html.

I am a little late on the Linux benchmarks.
