Hi All,

I am having serious problems with my SCSI disk. Please take a
look and see if you know of a fix.

I have an Adaptex AHA2940.
Pentium 133
 - 4.1 GB r-square, seagate HD
 - Sony DAT drive
 - 1 micro-SCSI to centronics look-like cable (by amphenol)
 - 1 centronics - centronics cable (by amphenol)
 - 1 terminator

I have used both the tape drive and disk with no terminator for two years
with no problems under RH4.2, kernel 2.0.27.

When I installed RH5.0 (2.0.32) I got many complaints and things looked funyy
so I got a terminator and it was OK - (couldn't say perfect as my system
would crash sometimes, but it would always happen to some corrupted file
anyway).

recently I am having problems all the time.

The problem:

several operations which lead to errors on my SCSI disk hang the system.

examples:

gunzipping a 100MBytes file that is broken
converting files from .imh to .fits format
reading a tape from the SCSI tape to the SCSI disk

I have tried the same operations at my work machine, (on the same HD using
an Adaptex AHA-2920 instead of the 2940 I have at home - as well as another
cable)

there I only get an error message:

euler|.../contrib/stsdas> gunzip sts.gz
gunzip: sts.gz: invalid compressed data--crc error

Both machines run 2.0.32 (I recently upgraded to RH5.1 - 2.0.34 and have the
same problem)

Also, if I copy the "problem file" to my IDE disk
and try to gunzip it will not crash the system and will just display
the same error message as above.

I recently downloaded my whole account to a tape. Read the tape on
another machine, worked at it for a while and then re-wrote the tape.
Bringing it back home I cannot read my stuff into the SCSI disk, however
I could read it into the IDE disk. Copying from the IDE disk to the
SCSI disk will also hang the system. This happens at several points
of the copying process. I could identify it is some files which cause
the system to hang. Even copying that single file will hang the system.
There are many of these files. Several of these problem files are ascii
text which I can edit and view easily on the IDE disk.

I have tried every possible arrangement of cabling and terminations
possible with the cables and terminators I described above and the
problem never goes away (I mean *every* possible combination, from
micro-SCSI cable to centronics to HD with termination. then the same
with termination. then adding tape without termination. then tape
with termination. then the tape first and disk last with termination
and finally tape first disk last and no termination).

does anybody have a suggestion on how to fix this?

thanks a bunch,

Antonio
